Music Performance students prepare for showcase

Students in Holland College’s Music Performance program, part of the School of Performing Arts, are getting ready for their first showcase of the year, which takes place on Friday, November 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the Florence Simmons Performance Hall on the Prince of Wales Campus.

The Music Performance program is building a strong following of music lovers in the community. Last spring’s showcase was a huge success, bringing many new guests into the performance hall, and giving the students the opportunity to entertain on a large scale.

The students work in ensembles throughout the term in a variety of genres including Country and Rock, R&B, Jazz, and Celtic and World Music. The showcase is their opportunity to perform in public with their best pieces. The audience plays an important role in the student showcases, said Gaylene Carragher, director of the School of Performing Arts.

“With a growing international student body in the program, many students’ families are too far away to travel to Prince Edward Island for the event, so enthusiastic Island support is especially welcome,” she said. “Our local students appreciate a good turn out, too!”

Admission is $10. Tickets may be purchased in advance from the box office of the Florence Simmons Performance Hall, Prince of Wales Campus, 140 Weymouth Street, Charlottetown.

The School of Performing Arts programs offered at Confederation Centre of the Arts, Theatre Performance, Dance Performance, and Performing Arts Foundation will host a showcase next spring. This semester, the second year students are doing a Theatre for Young Audiences tour to the high schools, and the first years will be in Confederation Centre’s Christmas production.
